The CMOS checksum error is a task that happens during startup, the issue is between the CMOS and the Bios. When you switch off your computer, CMOS keeps a record of the number that can blend with another that BIOS produces during startup. So if the value the two generates did not match, it leads to a checksum error.
Causes of CMOS Checksum
- Dead battery – if your battery dies for some time, the Bios will not be able to bring back the correct checksum value and your PC will now use the Bios default settings which leads to error.
- This happens when your PC is badly shutdown.
- When your Bios is outdated or corrupted, it will no longer sync with the operating system and other hardware thereby causing an error.
Ways to Fix CMOS Checksum Error

Try to Restart your PC

Restart Your Bios
- Press the power button and then click on the “F10” KEY if you are using HP, or you click on “F2” KEY.
- The setup and boot option appears on the screen for you to select.
- Tap on the “setup” tab.
- Click on the “F9” button to reset it.
- Press on the “Yes” tab to confirm. Some computers will present you with stuff like “restore security settings to factory settings” just at the bottom of the security tab. Click on the “F10” key to save.

Replace The Battery
This is a small battery on the motherboard that generates power to the CMOS when you disconnect from the source of power. The battery ensures that the Bios provide accurate settings to enable PC to start up normally. However, you can replace the battery.
Repair the Battery Terminals
Assuming the battery has more than three volts, the CMOS works without having issues and also brings back the correct Bios settings. This will be a result of the power issue and not the battery most times. When the positive and negative pins that attract power from the battery may be badly connected and then it will not supply power.
Now what you need to do is to remove the battery, bend adjust the negative pin upwards and also do that to the positive pin. Put back the battery and then look-out if the issue is fixed.
