Using a feature called Instagram Direct, a person can video chat up to six friends on iOS and Android devices.
To start a video chat on Instagram, ensure you are running the latest version of the Instagram app installed on your Android or iPhone. Also, make sure you have an account, then:
- Open the Instagram app
- Tap the paper airplane in the top right corner
For an existing conversation, tap a username or group name, then tap the video camera icon in the top right- hand corner of the screen to initiate a video chat. The person or group will receive a notification indicating you are video calling them.
To start a video chat in a new conversation, start a new conversation by tapping the plus (+) in the top right corner and selecting the person or people with whom you want to video chat. To push this a little further, you tap the video camera icon on the top right-hand corner of your screen to initiate a video chat. The person or group you call receives a notification indicating you are inviting them to join a video chat. At the end of a video chat, simply tap the red phone button.

One can browse Instagram while in a video chat with others. To do this, you tap the minimize button in the top left corner. This is represented as a little square within a square. On doing this, a window with your friend’s face on it will appear. You can move this on your screen wherever you like. You can then browse your feed, send direct messages, post photos and do any other thing while video chatting. Others won’t see what you are browsing. They only see your face.
PRIVACY CONSIDERATION FOR INSTAGRAM VIDEO CHATS
To prevent a person from trying to video chat with you, you can block the user by tapping the relevant username to access his or her profile. On gaining access, tap the three small dots in the top right-hand corner of your screen, then choose block.
You can mute the conversation you have had with the user from your Instagram feed. To do this, you tap the paper airplane icon in the top right corner to open your direct messages within Instagram. Tap the name or list of names you want to mute conversations with and tap Mute Video Chat. For group conversations, tap the group name and mute video chat.
UNMUTING VIDEO CHAT
On realizing that your chat with another is muted, you can unmute it by:
- Firstly, tap from the Instagram home screen
- Secondly, select the person or group you re not able to video call
- Thirdly, tap the group name or person’s account name at the top
- Lastly, make sure the Mute video chat option is not enabled.
