A photo montage is like a short movie of all your favorite pictures. If you’re new to iMovie, this is how you can create a Photo montage with iMovie:
-
Digitize your photos / Photo montage with iMovie
The first step is to select digital copies of all the pictures you plan to use. If the pictures come from a digital camera, or if you already have them scanned and saved on your computer, you’re all set.
When you’re dealing with standard photo prints, you can digitize them at home with a scanner. If you don’t have a scanner, or if you have a lot of pictures, any local photography store should be able to digitize them for a reasonable price.
Once you have digital copies of your pictures, save them in iPhoto. Now you can open iMovie and get started on your photomontage.
-
Access your digitized photos through iMovie
In iMovie, select the Media button. Then, select Photos at the top of the page. This opens your iPhoto library, so you can choose the pictures that you want to include in the montage.

-
Assemble the photos in the timeline
Drag your selected photos to the timeline. The red bar you see along the bottom of the photos indicates the computer’s progress in transferring the files from iPhoto to iMovie. Once the transfer is finished and the red bars disappear, you can reorder your photos by selecting and dragging them to the desired location.
-
Adjust image effects
Use the Photo Settings menu to control how each picture appears in the video. Checking the Ken Burns box activates the motion effect, allowing you to zoom in on the pictures (click Reverse to zoom out). Set the duration you want the picture on the screen and how far in you want to zoom.
-
Set Transition time
Transition effects smooth the breaks between photos. While iMovie gives you a wide selection of transitions to choose from, the simple Cross Dissolve is recommended because of the way it seamlessly blends the images.
Open the Transitions menu by selecting Editing, then Transitions.
-
Place transitions between photographs
Once you’ve selected the transition you’ll use, drag it to the timeline. Place transitions between all of the photos.
-
Give your work a title
The Titles menu (found in Editing) offers several different styles to choose from. Most give you two lines of text to work with, one for the title of your video, and a smaller one below for the name of the creator or the date.
You can view your title in the monitor window, and experiment with different titles and speeds. You can then put your title in place by dragging the icon to the start of the timeline.
-
Add a Fade Out
Adding a Fade Out (found with the Transitions) ends your video elegantly. That way, when the pictures finish you’re left with a nice black screen, instead of a frozen final frame of video.
Apply this effect after the last picture in the video in the same way you did the title and the picture dissolves.
-
Review and Save
After completing the above steps, it’s time to give your photo montage a test run. Watch it from beginning to end to make sure all the picture effects, transitions, and titles look good.
Once you’re satisfied with your photo montage, you’ll need to decide how you want to save it. The Share menu in iMovie offers many options for saving videos to a camera, computer, or disk.
